Privacy Policy

The Red Apple is an iOS app that helps you follow your goals and regular journeys by breaking them into stages and steps. This policy explains how the app and these web pages handle your data.

In short: the app does not require an account · your goal data is kept on your device first · with suitable iCloud settings it can sync between your Apple devices · you create encrypted backups yourself; the recovery key is stored on your device · Pro purchases are processed by Apple, and we never see your payment details.

Where your data lives

On your device

Goals, journeys, stages, steps, notes and progress records are kept on your device, in the app's local database. In this version there is no feature that uploads this data to a developer-run server.

Apple iCloud / CloudKit (optional)

The app works without iCloud. With suitable system iCloud settings, your app data can sync between your Apple devices via Apple's iCloud/CloudKit infrastructure; no separate app account is needed. This path depends on the availability of your Apple account and iCloud settings, and is subject to Apple's terms.

Encrypted backup files

When you use the backup feature, the app creates an encrypted copy of your data (a .redapple file). The file is encrypted with AES-256-GCM, and the recovery key is not written into the file. You choose where to save the backup (for example Files, iCloud Drive, or any other location).

Your recovery key is stored on your device and can be shown again from the app's backup section after authentication. We recommend keeping a copy somewhere safe and separate from your device; if no matching key can be found anywhere, the developer cannot decrypt your backup file.

In versions with a Copy button, the key is copied to the system clipboard only when you tap that button. This clipboard copy is configured for use on that device only and to expire after two minutes. A copy you paste into another app or service is subject to that app's or service's policies; clipboard expiry does not delete a pasted copy. Do not share your recovery key in support emails or public locations.

Automatic encrypted protective copies

The app may create extra encrypted protective copies on your device during operations such as backup and version upgrades. These copies are kept in local app storage or storage shared with the Apple widget. Deleting the app does not guarantee deletion of every copy in shared storage or of keys stored in Keychain. Exported files and any iCloud copies are managed separately; deleting the app does not delete all of them.

Readable export (Pro)

The readable export in Pro is different from the encrypted full-recovery file: the content of the file you create is readable. If you share this file, its contents become visible; only share it with people you trust.

Purchases

The Pro purchase is processed through Apple's in-app purchase system (StoreKit). Your payment details are handled by Apple; the developer cannot access or store your card details. The Pro entitlement is verified on your device through Apple's StoreKit.

App account and Cloud Pro (disabled in this version)

In-app sign-in and a separate cloud service (Cloud Pro) are not enabled in this version. When these features are enabled, this policy will be updated to explain the data processed, the providers involved, and the purposes of use.

This website

The source code of these marketing and support pages contains no analytics, advertising or tracking code, and the pages collect no form data. Your theme preference (light/dark) is stored locally, only in your browser, and is not sent to a server. The pages are served via GitHub and Cloudflare infrastructure; hosting providers may keep standard technical request logs (such as IP address and request time). These logs are separate from, and not linked to, the data inside the app.

Your control

  • You can edit, archive and delete your goal data from within the app.
  • In this version, no feature uploads your goal data to the developer's servers, so there is no developer server copy to request deletion of.
  • Copies of your data can live in different places: the main data on your device and the app's encrypted protective copies; the backup and export files you create; and, if your iCloud settings are on, Apple's iCloud/CloudKit copies.
  • The app's own storage, storage shared with the widget, and secure key storage are separate. Do not treat deleting the app as an operation that deletes every copy and key. You can manage exported files and Apple iCloud data separately in the service or location where they are stored.
  • Your backup files and recovery key stay in your hands.
  • Your goal data is not used for advertising or marketing, and is not sold.

Policy changes

This policy is updated when needed; the current version is always published on this page. For significant changes, the "last updated" date at the top of the page is renewed.
